 BOOK LAUNCH & RECIPE SAMPLING

ROSSEAU MARKET AGM
ROSSEAU MEMORIAL HALL
3:00 p.m., Sunday, April 29, 2012

ALL WELCOME!

Ever wondered how to bake with yeast? Make sauerkraut? Ice cream? Or how about brewing spruce beer?
You’ll find out how in Rosseau Market Cooks, an ambitious 200-page book of recipes published by Rosseau Farmers’ Market. The book will be launched in Rosseau at the Market’s AGM, Rosseau Memorial Hall, Sunday, April 29, at 3:00 p.m. The event is open to the public. Visitors will be invited to sample some of our exciting recipes.

These are the favourite recipes of Rosseau Market vendors and visitors, their friends and relatives, and residents of Rosseau and Hekkla, presented with humour, practical advice, and brief historical annotations on the recipes, or on local village lore. Parry Sound artist Marc De Groote, a Rosseau Market member, generously provided sketches for the book.

Many of the recipes have a backwoods flavour. There is one recipe that was found in an abandoned homestead (The cookbook, or what was left of it, was in pieces. I knew it was very old, so I felt compelled to bake as my ancestors did.). A couple of the recipes from Hekkla were brought over from Iceland, when the immigrants from that almost treeless country settled in the thick coniferous forest of the Canadian shield; they named their village Hekkla, after the volcano in their homeland.

Although some of the recipes awaken childhood memories of the master cooks of the home hearth, and of the good things of by-gone days, other recipes are downright dog-gone strange. One entry is named after a dog. Another appears to have been submitted by a dog (bearing the cautionary name of Hooligan)—dogs are, after all, some of the best taste-testers around.

This is a book you can’t pick up without being entertained. All entries have been tested—that is, tasted—passing over the palates and tickling the tummies of the same people you can find at Rosseau Market in the glad days of summer. Where else can you buy a cookbook and meet the talented authors in person, time and again?

The Price is $10.00
